The JST Group is an independent group of wholly owned Thai service and supply companies, with over 40 years experience in Thailand and South East Asia. JST have a flexible organization structure to provide locally-based and managed specialist services to meet emerging customer requirements. JST is a major supplier of technical products & services, providing specialist equipment, services and manpower (both local and expatriate) to the oil & gas, petrochemical, and other industries across the region, supported by their offices in Thailand and across South East Asia.

Business Challenges

JST used a local server with Microsoft Exchange 2003 to provide email to over 100 users across offices in Thailand and South East Asia. Their Bangkok based IT team was tasked with server management and maintenance, as well as end user support. Manual server patching was time intensive and software upgrades required costly purchases.

A widespread employee base meant all users, local and abroad, were required to connect to the local server. With Thailand’s notorious bandwidth issues, users were at the mercy of their internet connection when communication and access to shared files was critical.

Additionally, storing all data on a local server left JST vulnerable to disasters, both natural and man made. The years 2010 and 2011 saw Thailand experience political upheaval which left buildings burned to the ground and the worst flooding to hit Thailand in over 5 decades.

GoPomelo worked closely with the IT team and top management to customize a deployment plan and schedule. Plans were set to provide training for administrators as well as end users. Issues identified as business critical included implementation of Google Groups as a replacement for shared inboxes and a well communicated change management plan to encourage top down buy in of Google Apps and facilitate a smooth transition.

JST users had communicated via email and collaborated on work in the same manner for years. Special attention was paid to enabling users to leave their days of attachments and document versioning behind in favour of sharing via Google Drive and real time collaboration in docs and sheets.

GoPomelo technical specialists worked together with the JST IT team to connect Google Apps to an existing Active Directory which enabled administrators to automatically provision and update both users and groups within the organization hierarchy. Security measures and permission levels were easily configured to ensure no data vulnerabilities were present during or after the transition to Google Apps.
